Girl Scout Voyage
August 10-16, 2008

Channel Islands Harbor (Oxnard)
to San Pedro (Los Angeles)

This voyage will be open to teenage Girl Scouts (and also to mothers) and will be a challenging, hands-on voyage of exploration starting from Channel Islands Harbor (near Oxnard), then sailing through the Channel Islands of Southern California and ending as they sail the Schooner Seaward in the Parade of Sail along with other tall ships to start the Los Angeles Tall Ships Festival.

Dates: Join afternoon/evening of Sunday, August 10 (Channel Islands Harbor, Oxnard) Disembark morning of Saturday, Aug. 16 (San Pedro Harbor, Los Angeles).

Open to: Girl Scouts aged 14-18 and mothers/female guardians

Itinerary and Program: This voyage will set out to explore the Channel Islands, including Anacapa, Santa Barbara Island, and Catalina Islands, as they sail towards Los Angeles to join the other sailing ships taking part in the Festival of Sail. Participants will be able to join the Tall Ship festivities and visit other ships in Los Angeles on the final afternoon. Girls and accompanying adults will be taught how to sail and navigate and will be active in the hands-on workings of Seaward and the challenges of sailing. The weather in Southern California waters at this time of the year is typically gentle and sunny with afternoon breezes.

Cost: $600, includes food and all expenses aboard vessel (scholarships available)

Travel not included, but the voyage has been set up to be easy to travel to by train (train from Oakland to Oxnard on Aug. 10 arrives in evening and costs $46 and the train from LA to Oakland on Aug. 16 costs $48)

Seaward is an inspected U.S. Coast Guard passenger vessel, crewed by a USCG licensed captain, mate, and crew and has taken thousands of youth out on educational programs on San Francisco Bay and multi-day voyages along the California coast.
