News of Schooner Seaward

In addition to the routine maintenance needed to keep her sailing safely and looking sharp, Schooner Seaward has been getting some upgrades.  A new deck box between the masts provides on-deck storage as well as a teaching platform.

Perhaps most exciting, Seaward is getting a new educational resource – a traditional rowing and sailing tender to be used with Call of the Sea’s overnight programs:

Designed by the famed John Atkin, this traditionally styled 12-foot skiff will be built by the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association’s Youth Boatbuilding program.  During October through December, youth from San Francisco’s continuation high schools will work under the direction of master boatbuilders to craft the rowing version (the sailing rig will come later).

We’re excited not only to be adding this lovely small craft to Schooner Seaward’s programs, but to be a partner in building it with students.  What is our part?  We need to come up with the materials: specialty lumber and plywood, two pairs of rowlocks, paints, glue, fasteners and resins.  We have received $500 in donations toward these items, but we need to at least double that amount.  If you believe with us in the value of a small-craft component to Seaward’s overnight voyages, will you contribute toward the materials?   Click here, scroll down to the Donate button, and you’ll have an opportunity to type “Skiff” into the “special instructions” as you go donate through PayPal.
